Julie-Su was originally an enemy of Knuckles. Now she is one of his closest friends. Though neither will admit it at present it is fairly safe to say Julie-Su is Knuckles's girlfriend.
Julie-su has metallic quills (called dreeds by the Echidnas) for reasons I do not yet know.

In what is apparently a future scenario (give me a break, I don't have all the issues) Julie-su indeed become's Knuckles's wife. She is a very self-determined echidna and a great fighter, so its little wonder she is able to put up with it.
